Technologically speaking, we've really progressed in the past few years and now, it seems hard to find someone not on some sort of smartphone. Handheld devices, like phones and tablets are extremely useful when we're on the go. Nevertheless many people tend to hold their handheld devices very close to their eyes. This creates a whole lot of visual demands that force your eyes to operate in a way that's different to its normal activity.
Because people tend to hold smart phones so close, our eyes end up working overtime, just to look at text and images. After some time, research shows this may lead to problems with focus and vision, especially if you already wear glasses. If you already wear glasses, holding a device too close to your face will make it even harder for your eyes to correct for distance. When your eyes are under unnecessary pressure, it usually leads to painful headaches or migraines as a result of the eyestrain.
Also, more screen time can reduce your blink rate, and that can cause dry eyes and blurry vision.
In order to prevent eyestrain and blurred vision caused by our smartphones and tablets, as eye care professionals, we recommend keeping your phone at a safe distance from your eyes, and make the text a little bigger, so you can still read it. And don't use your phone for too much time at once! If it's been a while, let your eyes have a rest. If you still experience eyestrain, you might need glasses specifically made to help you focus up close. So be smart about the way you use your mobile devices and look after your eyes to ensure that your vision is protected.
